Charles Dickens used oncommon as an eye-dialect representation of uncommon.
Eye dialect is the use of words that are deliberately misspelled but properly pronounced.
It is dialect to the eye rather than to the ear.
(Uncommon (ʌnˈkɒm.ən): not seen/happening/experienced often. An uncommon quality is larger in amount/degree than usual).
